The Port of Melbourne, the busiest container port in Australia, has recently unveiled its new advanced port operations control centre (POCC) following a US$3.2 million investment by Port of Melbourne Corporation.
Opened by Victorian State Minister for Ports David Hodgett, the new POCC will be the focal point for supporting safe navigation across Port Phillip, the large series of shallow bays separating the city of Melbourne from Bass Strait, together with enhancing security monitoring of landside operations.
The POCC consolidates commercial vessel traffic services and security operations within the same facility, which is based on the Yarra River and overlooks the container terminal operations of Swanson Dock.
Opening the POCC, Mr Hodgett described the facility as the new "eyes and ears" of the 3,200 vessels that will visit the Port of Melbourne annually.
