Spanish shipping company Grupo Armas Trasmediterranea and fuel manufacturer Moeve have entered into an agreement wherein Moeve will supply 40,000 tonnes of "second generation" (2G) marine biofuels to the ports of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas in the Canary Islands.

The agreement covers the supply of the biofuels to the two ports up to the end of 2025. Under a framework between the two companies, the contract may be extended to 2026.

"We are determined to continue expanding throughout the Spanish territory, reinforcing our leadership in the production and marketing of marine biofuel," said Samir Fernández, Director of Marine Fuel Solutions at Moeve.

Moeve produces the biofuels at the San Roque Energy Park in Cádiz and at the La Rábida Energy Park in Huelva. The company already supplies the fuels to a number of major Spanish ports such as Algeciras, Barcelona, Ceuta and Huelva.

Armas Trasmediterranea said 2G renewable biofuels can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 90 per cent during their life cycle compared to traditional fuels. In addition, these can be used immediately in current infrastructure and engines without the need for modifications.
