A mid-October super-storm in Sydney caused two ships at Port Botany to collide following the snapping of the mooring lines of one of the vessels, reported the Sydney Morning Herald.

The storm caused the 'Kiel Express', operated by shipping liner Hapag-Lloyd, to break free from its moorings at Port Botany.

The 294-metre vessel then slashed the lines of another vessel, the 'OOCL Hong Kong', before colliding with the Safmarine-operated vessel 'Makutu'.

Tugs worked through the storm to anchor the vessels a safe distance from the docks. With on board cargo not fully secured, the vessels could not be taken farther out to sea, said the Sydney Morning Herald.

Damage to all the container vessels was minor, including a snagged tug propeller, and no injuries were reported. Operations at Port Botany then resumed within 24 hours.
