Louis Dreyfus to reopen Indiana grain export terminal
The Ports of Indiana has selected agricultural merchant Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) to operate the grain export facility at its Lake Michigan port of Burns Harbor. LDC is expected to begin operating the terminal in early 2026.
The Burns Harbor grain terminal, which operated from 1979 to 2023, has a storage capacity for 7.2 million bushels of grain, 200 railcars and 20 barges. According to the port, the facility can load an ocean vessel at up to 90,000 bushels per hour while simultaneously unloading unit trains and semi-trucks.
Jody Peacock, CEO of Ports of Indiana, stated that the partnership will provide critical access to global markets for regional farmers. Gordon Russell, LDC’s US Head of Grains and Oilseeds, described the port as a strategic asset that will allow the company to expand market access for those farmers.
The facility was previously operated by Cargill until 2023 when it relinquished control to the Ports of Indiana.
