International Transportation Service kicks off $365m terminal expansion at Port of Long Beach

Published on:

US terminal operator International Transportation Service (ITS) has launched the South Slip Fill Project, a US$365 million terminal expansion expected to ensure improved access for some of the world's largest container vessels at the Port of Long Beach.

When completed in December 2028, the larger ITS terminal at the Port of Long Beach will effectively increase cargo handling capacity by up to 50 per cent.

ITS said a key part of the project is a 560-foot (170-metre) extension of the existing quay. This critical upgrade will begin with filling in a 19-acre (7.7-hectare) middle "horseshoe" gap at the terminal that is no longer needed.

ITS said filling in the gap will allow its to simultaneously berth up to two 18,000TEU container vessels, thus increasing overall terminal throughput.

The project is scheduled to begin in July 2025 and will be delivered by the joint ventured formed by construction companies the Dutra Group and Griffith Company.
