Deep water terminal to be developed at UK's Great Yarmouth Port

The Port of Great Yarmouth is set to undergo an expansion, with plans announced to develop a new deep water terminal at the port, UK's Peel Ports Group confirmed recently.

Peel Ports said its plans to develop the southern terminal at the Great Yarmouth outer harbour amid a surge in demand from developers and construction contractors working on onshore and offshore infrastructure projects.

The planned development will consist of an additional 350 metres of quay, a Ro-Ro ramp, a heavy lift pad, and approximately 10 hectares of strengthened outdoor storage space.

Great Yarmouth is home to one of the deepest non-tidally restricted facilities on the UK’s east coast. Its existing terminals service a variety of construction customers, including infrastructure projects and offshore energy projects based in the southern North Sea.

"The Port of Great Yarmouth has been supporting major offshore and inland and offshore energy projects for over six decades, and we are seeing that demand continue to grow, with real momentum now building behind some major projects," said Richard Goffin, Port Director at Peel Ports Great Yarmouth.

"The port is ideally located to support the construction of vital infrastructure projects and is less restricted than its east coast competitors who are impacted by items such as locks, shallow approach channels and road transport bottlenecks."

The terminal development will be undertaken in fulfilment of a £50 million (US$70 million) investment.
