Colombian rail alternative to Panama Canal?

Published on:

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has announced that his country is in talks with China to link Colombia's coasts by rail, providing an alternative to the Panama Canal, according to the Financial Times.

The project, to be funded by the Chinese Development Bank and operated by China Railway Group, includes a 791-kilometre railway, and upgrades to the Pacific Ocean-side port of Buenaventura.

Santos told the Financial Times that the project was in the advanced stages of planning, and that the project made a lot of sense given Asia's rising power in the world economy.
