The Republic of Benin says that it will build five inland ports for the purpose of moving goods to landlocked centres in Nigeria, Togo, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
According to local media reports, the Port of Cotonou, which is Benin's main port, is currently handling 27 percent more imports since its 2010 expansion, with capacity now allowing for 7.0 million metric tonnes.
Storage capacity prior to the expansion could only accommodate 5.5 million metric tonnes of imports.
Development of the new ports will begin in 2011.
