Bahrain: His Majesty King Hamad bin Issa Al Khalifa has recently inaugurated a new state-of-the-art superport, the Khalifa Bin Salman Port.
Located on over 900,000 square metres of land, the US$362 million port will have container handling facilities as well as facilities for general, break-bulk and Ro-Ro handling. There is also a separate cruise facility.
The port is also known as the Bahrain Gateway and is designed to handle 1.1 million TEU per year. It is designed to handle post-Panamax vessels on containerships up to 8,000TEU compared with the current maximum capacity for 3,000TEU boxships.
The port will be operated by APM Terminals, which signed a 25-year concession for Khalifa Bin Salman Port.
