Two vessels hijacked by Somali pirates were recaptured on June 2 and a third vessel managed to avoid capture when it evaded pirates, according to The Journal of Commerce Online.
The crew of a Libyan-owned cargo ship disarmed their sleeping Somali captors, killing five of them to regain control of their vessel, while in the Gulf of Aden security forces in Somalia's semi-autonomous northern region of Puntland freed a Panama-flagged cargo ship, the 'QSM Dubai'.
The incidents prompted the EU anti-piracy force to send its closest warship for assistance, which was initially blocked by pirates until the warship's helicopter deterred further aggression. One crewmember in the EU force was seriously injured during the incident.
In the third incident pirate armed with machine guns failed to capture a container ship off the coast of Somalia when the vessel increased speed and outran their skiff.
