Joint Maritime Information Center says Strait of Hormuz remains open to shipping amid Israel-Iran hostilities

Published on:

Combined Maritime Forces' Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) has stated that the regional threat level in the Arabian Gulf remains "significant" as strikes continue from both Iran and Israel and that the maritime threat level remains "elevated" due to uncertainty within the current environment.

JMIC said the Strait of Hormuz remains open and commercial traffic continues to flow, but it has received reports of electronic interference stemming from the Port of Bandar Abbas in southern Iran's Hormozgan province.

JMIC said that although there remains a media narrative on a potential blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, it has no confirmed information pointing towards a blockade or closure, but it will follow the situation closely.

JMIC has advised companies to conduct due diligence before accepting unconfirmed media reports. The agency added that it is continuing to monitor the situation closely and that it will provide timely updates should there be any changes.

While the JMIC has admitted that there are no confirmed indications of an immediate threat to maritime traffic, a reassessment would be prompted by scenarios such as: use of ballistic or cruise missiles near major maritime chokepoints; targeting of western-aligned or affiliated commercial vessels; and collateral risks from regional conflict expanding to coastal, offshore, or port infrastructure.

Owners and charterers are advised to continue to conduct thorough threat and risk assessments well in advance of entering the Arabian Gulf and implement necessary security and risk mitigation measures while operating in the region.

JMIC has recommended that, as the situation remains fluid, owners and charters must pay close attention to the changing environment.

Companies are advised to closely monitor all electronic aids and communication networks for electronic interference, and to be ready with alternative options should navigation aids fail.
