ICS critical of IMO’s carbon dioxide efficiency index

Published on

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has warned that the IMO's formula for determining a ship's energy efficiency design index (EEDI) could be too complex.

The IMO developed the EEDI to find a method to measure the industry's reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, and will eventually set a mandatory limit on the amount of emissions a vessel is allowed to emit.

The IMO is planning to have the EEDI finalised by November, when there will be a meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark, in which the maritime industry will strive to find a successor to the Kyoto Protocol.

The ICS has said that the IMO's complex formula for the in index had been adjusted several times and was in danger of becoming unusable. The ICS is also concerned that the index would not be appropriate for all ship types, pointing out that while the EEDI would work well on tankers and bulkers, vessels with more complex propulsion systems such as offshore vessels and tugs would be rated too highly.
