The landing helicopter dock (LHD) HMAS 'Canberra' has been handed over to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) by the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO).

Constructed in Spain by Navantia, the vessel is the largest in Australia's naval fleet. A second LHD will be finished and delivered to RAN in 2015.

This vessel will provide operational support for the Australian Defence Force when on defence-related missions and humanitarian/peacekeeping operations.

Navantia built approximately 85 per cent of HMAS 'Canberra' in Spain, with the remainder completed in Australia.

Navantia was responsible for the hull construction and the installation and integration of all on board systems up to the fly deck.
