Hanjin Heavy Industries (HHIC) subsidiary, Yeongdo Shipyard, has resumed operations with the construction of a 180,000DWT dry bulker.

According to Asiasis, the shipyard was mothballed three years ago as a result of the downturn in shipbuilding following the global financial crisis.

The newbuilding currently under construction is for Turkish shipowner CINER. A steel cutting ceremony was held for the vessel in early July.

Formerly one of Korea's top performing shipyards, Yeongdo hopes to regain its past track record, with Asiasis noting the company's shipbuilding slots were filled until 2016.

The yard is also focusing on a shipbuilding venture in the Subic region of the Philippines.
