Albwardy Marine Engineering's latest shipyard, Damen Shipyards Sharjah (DSS), was recently declared "open for business" at a ceremony held in mid-January.

A joint venture between family-owned companies Damen Shipyards Group and Albwardy Marine Engineering, the core activities at DSS will include Damen newbuilds, Albwardy conversions, dry-dockings, and repairs.

DSS is located in the Sharjah Hamriyah Free-zone in the Arab Emirate of Sharjah. The new yard is located on a large 284,000m2 site, has unrestricted access to the sea and meets high standards of modern ship construction and repair.

The facility is equipped with a 120-metre x 26.5-metre ship-lift, with a 5,200-tonne capacity and is connected to eight 125-metre dry-berths. It also features a fully enclosed blasting and painting shed and an undercover new-build construction hall. Located adjacent is an extensive repair space with 1,200 metres of quay with a water depth up to nine metres.
