CLdN orders two 6,700-lane-metre dual-fuel Ro-Ro vessels from HD Hyundai

The trailer-focused ships are scheduled for delivery in mid-2029 and are expected to offer 30–40 per cent better fuel efficiency per tonne-kilometre than CLdN’s 5,000-lane-metre class.

CLdN has ordered two 6,700-lane-metre Ro-Ro ferries from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries for delivery in mid-2029.

Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2028. The order, announced on Tuesday, covers the 15th and 16th vessels that CLdN has ordered from the South Korean shipbuilder over the past decade.

The newbuildings are configured for trailer cargo and will have one additional deck compared with CLdN’s existing 5,000-lane-metre vessels. They will provide more ground space.

Cargo will reach the upper decks directly via wide ramps, allowing loading and unloading to happen more quickly. CLdN said this layout would shorten port turnaround times and support the high-frequency schedules operated across its European shortsea network.

Each vessel will be capable of running on standard marine diesel or liquefied natural gas (LNG). The design reserves room for batteries and larger generators linked to the electric shafts, which can be installed as those technologies develop.

CLdN expects each new ship to consume about the same amount of fuel as one of its existing 5,000-lane-metre vessels. The additional cargo capacity is forecast to improve fuel efficiency per tonne-kilometre by 30–40 per cent compared with that class.

The 6,700-lane-metre ships will sit between CLdN’s six-vessel H5 class, which provides 5,000 lane metres per ship, and its larger G9 vessels. The company’s two G9 ships each offer 8,000 lane metres, while two 8,400-lane-metre G9e hybrid vessels entered service in 2025.
