China's Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) has been awarded a contract for the construction of ten new pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) in a series.
The contract has a total value of approximately US$1 billion. Options are also available for up to four additional vessels from the same series.
The ships will each have a capacity of 8,200 CEUs and dual-fuel engines that can also run on LNG.
Deliveries are scheduled to take place between 2029 and 2031.
GSI's official statement on the order for the new PCTCs did not identify the customer.
However, Chinese media had earlier stated that the builder was in the final stages of negotiations with Israeli shipping company Ray Car Carriers for a similar number of vessels.
Most of Ray Car Carriers' previous newbuilding orders were placed with South Korea's HD Hyundai.
This number also includes two 7,300CEU PCTCs to be built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in fulfilment of a US$270 million order placed in April of this year.
