Norwegian partnership to introduce ammonia-powered vessel for timber transport

Published on:

Norwegian companies Skarv Shipping and Arriva Shipping have joined a collaboration that will introduce an ammonia- and electric-powered general cargo vessel to transport timber to other markets throughout Europe.

The vessel is scheduled to enter operational service in the second quarter of 2027. It will transport timber on behalf of Norwegian exporter Viken AT Market with Arriva Shipping being responsible for commercial management.

The completed vessel will have an LOA of 108.2 metres, a beam of 18.1 metres, a moulded depth of 9.2 metres, a design draught of 6.5 metres, a deadweight of 7,800 at maximum draught, and a total hold capacity of 7,800 cubic metres. Advanced ammonia safety systems will also be fitted.

The ship is designed to sail most efficiently at low speeds, which helps ensure economically viable operations despite the higher cost of ammonia compared to traditional fuels. A 160-cubic-metre ammonia tank, mixed with MGO as pilot fuel, will provide enough fuel for a 14-day round trip from Norway to the continent.

The vessel is being developed by Skarv Shipping in collaboration with Norwegian naval architecture firm LMG Marin.
