Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding (MES) recently completed and delivered a 56,000DWT bulk carrier 'Arnica' (MES Hull No. 1,791) at its Chiba Works to Norden Shipping, Singapore. It will be the company's 109th delivery.

This vessel is a Handymax bulk carrier of 56,000DWT with a huge cargo hold capacity over 70,000 cubic-metres.

Like all of the Mitsui 56 bulk carriers, 'Arnica' has an overall length of 189.99 metres on a moulded beam of 32.25 metres with a depth of 18.1 metres and a draught of 12.69 metres.

The specific measured deadweight of this particular realization of the Mitsui 56 is recorded at 56,106 tonnes.

'Arnica' is powered by a single Mitsui-MAN B&W 6S50MC-C main diesel engine with a maximum continuous output of 9,070kW at 125rpm.

The vessel has a service speed of 14.5 knots and a complement of 26.

The vessel is designed to have a good manageable size of 56,000DWT at the summer draught, a length and draught formulated in consideration of maximum accessibility to the world's main ports and low fuel oil consumption based on solid propulsive performance.

The vessel has five cargo holds and four cranes for handling cargo.

In order to load various kinds of cargo, the vessel is designed to have good tank top strength and to be suitable for efficient cargo handling.

Thus, the size of hatch openings is the largest for this type of vessel in terms of both length and width; each cargo hold has a sufficient clear length in order to load long pipes; cargo holds are well strengthened to load heavy cargo such as hot coil; and the outfitting arrangement on the upper deck and hatch cover strength is specifically designed for loading packaged lumber.

Ballast water on the vessel can be changed during navigation for protection of the marine environment.
