Germany's CLI orders cargo vessel for Europe-Canada route

Published on:

German shipping company CLI has awarded Dutch shipbuilder Royal Bodewes a contract for the construction of a new cargo vessel that will be deployed on the regular shipping route between Canada, the Netherlands and the UK.

The completed multi-purpose cargo vessel will have a deadweight of almost 8,500 and will feature advanced environmental and fuel efficiency technologies.

Royal Bodewes said the ship will be built to meet the increasing demands for sustainable maritime transatlantic transport between Europe and North America.

The ship will be fitted with one MAN methanol-ready main engine and two deck cranes, each with a lifting capacity of 80 tons, making it ideal for heavy-duty cargo operations. It will also be equipped with sail-assisted propulsion technology, which the builder said will directly reduce CO2 emissions while maintaining high speed.

Construction of the ship is set to begin in October 2025 at Royal Bodewes' shipyard in Hoogezand. Delivery to CLI is scheduled for the summer of 2026.

Royal Bodewes said the ship will be designed for high-speed service, ensuring at least one extra voyage per year on the transatlantic route compared to the current vessel trading on this route.
