The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index fell on Tuesday, pressured by weakness in the Capesize vessel category.
The main Baltic index fell 29 points, or 0.9 per cent, to 3,157.
The Capesize index was down 115 points, or 2.1 per cent, at 5,221.
Average daily earnings for Capesize vessels fell $1,049 to $43,847.
Iron ore futures were little changed, as traders weighed expectations of a pickup in port arrivals following elevated global shipments against a private survey showing accelerating factory activity in China.
The Panamax index gained 45 points, or 1.9 per cent, to 2,360.
Average daily earnings for Panamax vessels increased $403 to $21,237.
Among smaller vessels, the supramax index was up three points, or 0.18 per cent, at 1,650.
