Commercial shipping traffic continues through Strait of Hormuz amid uncertainty following Israel-Iran hostilities

Published on:

Combined Maritime Forces' Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) reported that as of Tuesday, June 24, the strategic situation in the Strait of Hormuz and the broader Middle East remains uncertain following recent airstrikes between Iranian and Israel and attacks on US bases from Iran.

The JMIC said commercial maritime traffic continues to flow through the strait, but with reduced numbers recorded for Monday, June 23.

The JMIC said there remains no impact to commercial shipping; however, due to the uncertainty of maritime security the maritime domain threat remains elevated.

Despite reports of a ceasefire between the US, Israel, and Iran, the JMIC has advised that the maritime industry should remain on high alert.

"Conflicting statements from Iranian officials and continued hostilities highlight the fragility of the situation," the JMIC said in a recent update. "While the media reports cautious optimism, they do not constitute a reliable basis for reducing security measures. Underlying geopolitical tensions remain unresolved, and threats from Iranian-aligned groups like the Houthis persist."

Electronic interference and the strategic vulnerability of key choke points such as the Strait of Hormuz, "further underscore the ongoing risks," the JMIC remarked.

The JMIC said that there is no indication that the Strait of Hormuz will be blocked or closed, and that it is persistently monitoring vessel movements in the region.
