The Independent is reporting that the Chinese navy has completed sea trials on the 'Liaoning', the nation's first aircraft carrier.
Seen as another sign of sabre-rattling from the emerging superpower, the Russian-built vessel was delivered in 2012 following an extensive decades-long refurbishment.
According to state news agency Xinhua, the vessel conducted a 37-day voyage around the South China Sea, an area currently embroiled in rising tensions between neighbours Japan, the Philippines and Vietnam over territorial claims and the sovereignty of outlying islands.
Xinhua also reported that all testing procedures of the vessel went as planned, while other news agencies reported that the whole exercise was under close surveillance by the United States.
