Business News Americas reports the Argentine-Uruguayan commission that manages the bi-national Uruguay River, CARU, expects to award a consulting tender for dredging work in May, according to technical secretary Alejandro Arcelus.

On March 14, four consortia from Argentina and Uruguay presented technical offers for the consultancy, according to a press release from Uruguay's transport and public works ministry (MTOP).

The bidders were: Egasat-Estudio de Ambiente y Desarrollo, Eih-Incociv, Serman & Asociados-CSI Ingenieros and Consulbaires Ingenieros Consultores-Estudios y Proyectos.

"Offers were opened last week and an evaluation committee has been established. The award should probably take place in a couple of months," Arcelus said.

The awardee will have six months to complete the consultancy.

The project entails dredging a 187km stretch of the river from Punta Gorda up to and including the access channel of Uruguay's Concepcion port, allowing the canal and port to handle Panamax-type vessels.

The timeline for the actual dredging work will depend on when the consultancy is completed, as well as the availability of funds, according to Arcelus.

"The idea is for it to take place as soon as possible," the official added.
