HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (KSOE) has entered into an agreement with South Korean container line HMM for the construction of eight 13,000TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessels in a series.

The contract is worth KRW1.9196 trillion (US$1.4 billion). HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will build two of the ships at Ulsan, while HD Hyundai Samho will build the remaining six at Yeongam.

Deliveries are scheduled to take place sequentially through 2029.

Each vessel will measure 337 metres long, 51 metres wide, and 27.9 metres high. The ships will have dual-fuel engines capable of operating on LNG as well as conventional marine fuel.

Independent LNG fuel tanks will be produced by KSOE’s HD Hyundai EcoVina. HD Hyundai described the arrangement as part of its development of an internal supply chain for key equipment used in ships powered by alternative fuels.

"Inquiries for orders for LNG and LPG carriers and container ships have continued, centered on global shipping companies," an HD Hyundai official said.

HMM plans to deploy the ships on its Far East–India–Mediterranean service.

The order followed the HMM board's approval on October 15 of a wider investment covering the eight newbuildings and four smaller vessels acquired through resale agreements, with a total vessel price of US$1.62 billion.

In November 2025, HMM ordered eight 13,400TEU LNG dual-fuel ships of the same dimensions from the two yards in an identical two-and-six split. That contract was valued at KRW2.13 trillion (US$1.6 billion).
