DP World opens new sea-river shipping route in Vietnam
UAE port operator DP World and Vietnamese shipping company VIMC Container Lines launched a new domestic sea-river transport route connecting the Vietnamese ports of Can Tho and Cai Mep in a ceremony on Friday, May 30.
DP World said the barge service will operate twice a week and reduce transit times of 48 hours by the river ways to just 15 hours via a combination of river and sea routes.
DP World said that while the previous journey covered approximately 367 kilometres, the coastal route is significantly shorter at around 200 kilometres, making it a faster, more sustainable and cost-effective solution for cargo owners across Vietnam.
Designed to support dry and cold chain logistics, the service can transport up to several hundred TEUs per voyage and is capable of handling a large number of refrigerated containers.
The partners plan to expand the route to include a call at the Saigon Premier Container Terminal, which is operated by DP World, and a call at Saigon Hiep Phuoc Port under VIMC Container Lines' parent company Vietnam Maritime Corporation.
