A containership sank in the waters just south of the Penghu Islands in the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday, October 3 (local time).
The trouble began on the morning of October 2 when rough seas caused the 70-metre, 1,455DWT Ying Hai to list heavily to starboard. Several of its containers shifted on deck with some even going overboard.
The crew sent out a distress call at 10:00 on October 2, after which rescue boats proceeded immediately to the area of the incident.
All nine crew members were safely rescued.
Attempts to tow Ying Hai proved futile and the ship eventually sank.
The ship was en route from Kaohsiung to Busan, South Korea, at the time of the incident.
