Clearing begins on MSC ship in Spain's Vigo Port following container loss

Published on:

Clearing operations have commenced on an MSC-operated vessel that arrived at the Port of Vigo in Spain late last week after it lost some of its cargo of containers while underway in the Atlantic Ocean.

Two large mobile cranes and a smaller one mounted on a floating pontoon have been deployed to clear some of the collapsed boxes on the Portuguese-flagged container vessel MSC Houston V, which has remained at the port since Friday, March 21.

One day before it arrived in Vigo, the ship encountered rough seas and wind gusts of up to 48 knots as Storm Martinho swept through the waters off Cape St Vincent in Portugal. At least 15 containers fell into the sea while many of those that remained on board collapsed with some dangling over the starboard side near the stern.

The ship had earlier departed Piraeus in Greece and was en route to Liverpool when the collapse occurred. It later sought shelter in Vigo to wait out the storm, but was forced to prolong its stay for its deck to be cleared of debris.
