Australian government goes after “green groups”

Published on

The Australian is reporting the announcement of a new Federal Government of Australia policy that will see conservation groups seeking boycotts of products liable for prosecution under consumer law.

Announced by the Abbott Government's parliamentary secretary for agriculture, Richard Colbeck, the law focuses on the prevention of companies being held hostage by "green groups" due to alleged poor environmental practices.

According to The Australian, Section 45D of the act prevents action to hinder or prevent a third person supplying goods to, or buying them from, another person. The law restrains business from unfair dealings and trade unions from dragging third parties into industrial disputes via sympathy strikes or trade boycotts.

However, section 45DA, the focus of the announcement, exempts people from the secondary boycott provisions if their actions are "substantially related to environmental or consumer protection".
