Half the 69 vessels that have been delayed at Indian shipyards are being built at two of the country's largest yards, ABG Shipyard and Bharati Shipyard.
According to Drewry Shipping Consultants, the number of vessels being delayed equates to about 28 percent of the country's entire order book.
Figures from Credit Analysis & Research, India, and Clarkson Research Services, UK, showed that there were a total of 248 vessels on order in India, compared with 277 vessels on order at South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries.
"Some of the vessels are delayed for a few months," explained an analyst with Drewry. "Others have yet to have the keel laid."
Among the vessels delayed are six bulk carriers worth US$36 million each, which were ordered by John Fredriksen-owned company, the Golden Ocean Group. Other vessels include ten dry cargoships, three passenger ships, six tankers and 32 OSVs.
