The likelihood of a ship being involved in a serious grounding or contact accident has doubled in recent years and PhD student, Tan-Hoi Nguyen, is developing a real-time decision support tool for accurately determining the contact points and forces experienced by a ship during such an event.

Working at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Mr Nguyen has made advances in the sophistication of seabed-hull modelling which can be used in combination with hull monitoring systems to identify, in principle, critical ship performance including hull collapse or plate fracture.

He is also working on accurate modelling of the damage to hull and seabed before a grounded vessel comes to a standstill to further the system's decision-making potential.
