An incident on a product tanker that was sailing through the English Channel had claimed the life of one of its crew on Wednesday, July 29.

The Marshall Islands-flagged Navig8 Axinite was at a point 40 nautical miles north of Morlaix, France, when its captain sent out a distress call at 18:50 local time saying that one of the crew had been seriously injured.

A French Navy helicopter carrying a team of medics flew to the ship at around 20:15 to render aid to the injured crewman. Tragically, despite the medical team’s efforts, the victim could not be revived and was declared dead at 20:45.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the individual, who has been identified as an Indian national, had become mortally wounded when an onboard pipe burst due to intense pressure.

Navig8 Axinite had just departed Rotterdam and was en route to Ukraine when the incident occurred.
