DNV GL and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) have begun collaborating on the development of new very large crude carrier (VLCC) and MR tanker designs that can cope with stricter environmental regulations in the future.

In response to the recent development of regulations covering greenhouse gas emissions due to enter into force in 2023, HHI has introduced a range of eco-friendly ships that are equipped with alternative fuel technologies and energy-reducing systems. Among these ships are 40 LNG dual-fuelled vessels already delivered or under construction.

By applying DNV GL’s data-based carbon robust model to its VLCC and MR tanker ships, HHI found that an LNG fuel propulsion system in combination with advanced energy saving devices (ESDs) can enable a vessel to meet the new Carbon Intensity Indicator index over its expected lifetime.
