Development work has begun on a new series of four hybrid tankers to be operated by V-Bunkers, the Singapore-based bunkering division of Geneva-headquartered commodities company Vitol.

The vessels are being designed by SeaTech Solutions International of Singapore and will be fitted with 480kWh liquid-cooled energy storage systems (ESS). The ESS on each ship will be primarily used for peak shaving to help optimise energy use, reduce fuel and maintenance costs, and improve responsiveness and reliability of power management, thus enhancing safety of operations.

Shift Clean Energy, which will supply the ESS, said the vessels will be Singapore’s first hybrid bunker tankers.
