Three killed, three injured in Russian tanker explosion

Three people were killed while another three were injured in an explosion on a product tanker in the port of Machatschkala in the Russian republic of Dagestan on Tuesday, June 11.

An official of the Ministry of Emergency Situations said the explosion occurred on the 140-metre-long VF Tanker 16 as the crew were discharging the ship’s cargo of crude oil.

The three injured sailors suffered varying degrees of burn injuries and have been rushed to hospital. One is reportedly in critical condition after suffering severe burns on his skin.

No oil spills were detected in the water following the incident.

VF Tanker 16 had a crew of 12 at the time the explosion occurred.
