BSS, Babcock unite for LNG gas supply vessel

Global maritime services company Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSS) and British engineering firm Babcock International Group are collaborating to develop a gas supply vessel (GSV).

The 7,500-cubic-metre vessel will be used for the LNG fuelling of ferries, boxships, cruise vessels and other shore-based gas consumers in the Baltic Sea.

The GSV will be built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan, South Korea, with the keel-laying ceremony scheduled this month, and the launch in April.

Delivery is expected in September.

The first vessel of its kind to use Babcock’s patent-pending FGSV0 technology, the GSV delivers LNG into the receiving vessel with zero emissions during normal operations.

It is designed to meet the International Maritime Organisation’s global cap of 0.5 per cent on shipping-related sulphur emissions, which will be enforced from January 2020.
