Canada amends small fishing vessel inspection regulations

The Canadian Government’s Minister of Transport, Marc Garneau, has announced several amendments to the small fishing vessel inspection regulations.

Garneau believes the changes will enhance safety in the country’s commercial fishing industry.

The amended regulations were published in the Canada Gazette. The new regulations apply to Canadian fishing vessels that are not more than 24.4 metres in length and not more than 150 gross tonnage.

The new regulations update the current safety equipment and vessel stability requirements as well as introduce safe operating procedures for small fishing vessels.

Fishing vessel owners will have one year to familiarise themselves and get up-to-date with the new requirements before the new regulations come into force.
