UAE-based port operations and logistics specialist DP World has begun construction of a new deep-water port in Ndayane in Senegal.

The project consists of two phases and has a total cost of approximately US$1 billion.

Phase one of the development of the port will include a container terminal with 840 metres of quay and a new five-kilometre marine channel designed to handle two 336-metre-long vessels simultaneously. This phase will increase container handling capacity by 1.2 million TEUs a year.

In phase two, an additional container quay measuring 410 metres long will be developed.

DP World will build and operate the new Port of Ndayane in fulfilment of a concession agreement signed with the Government of Senegal in December 2020.
