Breakwaters at new tuna port in Chennai nearing completion

Construction is nearly completed on a pair of breakwaters at a new tuna fishing port that will be able to accommodate up to 800 vessels in Chennai, India.

The breakwaters at the port of Tiruvottiyur Kuppam will be completed by the end of January while construction of the remaining areas of the new port including wharfs, jetties, and a boat repair shed is expected to conclude in October.

The authorities tasked with the construction said the completion of the breakwaters will result in a large protected bay wherein boats can safely unload their catch.

The new port at Tiruvottiyur Kuppam will augment an existing tuna port at Kasimedu some 3.5 kilometres away. Authorities said the Kasimedu port has become congested, thus necessitating the construction of an additional port.
