Transport Scotland eyes Uig Harbour master plan

Dredging works and updating the passenger terminal are among the improvements identified in the masterplan for Uig Harbour on Scotland’s Skye Coast.

The masterplan was created following the decision by Transport Scotland, Caledonian Maritime Assets (CMAL) and CalMac Ferries to provide a larger vessel for the Uig, Tarbert and Lochmaddy Triangle lifeline ferry service to the Western Isles.

The Highland and Western Isles councils are developing the three ports in preparation for the vessel and potential for additional passengers and vehicle traffic.

“The funding for the capital costs of the infrastructure improvement works at Uig will be recovered through increased harbour dues levied on CalMac,” the Highland Council said.

Discussions were continuing over the scope and timing of the terminal improvement works, together with the cost and associated increase in harbour dues, the council added.

Works include land reclamation, berthing structure strengthening and widening, new fendering, dredging, new gangway, link span refurbishment or replacement, passenger walkway shelter on the approach way and widening, the demolition and rebuilding of the existing old pier head, and relocation of harbourmaster’s office.

The masterplan report has been submitted to Transport Scotland.
