Norwegian ports to develop environmental port index

The port of Stavanger.

Some of Norway’s largest cruise ports have agreed on a model for a future “environmental port index” (EPI).

The goal is to provide economic rewards for the ships with the lowest environmental footprints to encourage others to reduce their own.

Many ports use an “environmental ships index” (ESI), but the EPI will focus on emissions from ships while at berth.

Ports participating include Stavanger, Oslo, Aurland/Flåm, Stranda/Geirangerfjord, Ålesund, Molde and Romsdal, Trondheim, Eidfjord, Cruise Destination Hardangerfjord, Tromsø, Norwegian Ports Association, Innovation Norway and the Norwegian Coastal Administration.
