Tasmania-based shipping company SeaRoad and German shipbuilder Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) have finalised the contract for the purchase of a new freight-only Ro-Ro vessel with LNG propulsion.

Construction of the 210- by 29.3-metre vessel will commence in the winter of 2021-2022. Delivery is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2023.

Once completed, the vessel will have 3,792 lane metres available for the carriage of freight units, plus capacity for over 100 trade vehicles. A special requirement for the vessel is the capability to transport heavy cargo with a unit weight of up to 100 tonnes.

The newbuilding order is valued at approximately €100 million (US$117.16 million).

The new Ro-Ro vessel will operate on Bass Strait between Devonport, on the island of Tasmania, and Melbourne, Victoria, on mainland Australia.
