Construction is underway on a new cable ferry for operation in Frontenac Islands Township in Canada’s Ontario province.

The newer vessel, which will be named Simcoe Islander II, will have triple the capacity of the 1963-built vehicle ferry that it is slated to replace on the route between Wolfe and Simcoe Island.

The replacement cable ferry for Frontenac is being built by Heddle Shipyards of Hamilton under a CA$3.3 million (US$2.5 million) contract awarded by the Ontario government in November 2021.
