India’s Cochin Shipyard has been awarded contracts by Norwegian shipowner Asko Maritime for the construction of two autonomous electric-powered, freight-only Ro-Ro vessels with an option for the construction of two more identical vessels.

The Norwegian government-funded project seeks to introduce emission-free marine transport in the waters of the Oslofjord.

A joint venture of Kongsberg Maritime and Wilhelmsen will operate the Ro-Ros, each of which will have a length of 67 metres, a 1,846kWh battery, and capacity for 16 standard EU trailers.

The vessels will be designed by Naval Dynamics Norway and classed by DNV GL.
