One person has been reported as missing after a cargo vessel sank off the eastern Indonesian province of West Papua on Friday, March 20.

The 66-metre Surya Express with 18 crewmembers on board was en route to West Papua after having sailed out of Gresik in East Java when it sank in the waters of Manokwari-Tambrauw at 23:15 local time.

Indonesia’s Basarnas national search and rescue (SAR) agency despatched a boat to Surya Express‘ last reported position. The SAR team arrived in the area at 03:10 on Saturday, March 21, and found all but one of the cargo vessel’s crew adrift in the water and wearing life jackets.

Basarnas vessels are continuing to patrol the area to attempt to locate any sign of the missing sailor.
