Local authorities are looking into the possibility that a bulk carrier was responsible for a recent pollution incident in Brazil’s Santos Bay Harbour.

The Greek-owned, Cypriot-flagged Rook was berthed at Santos Bay when a large spill was detected near and around the vessel on January 10.

Eyewitnesses have also identified scores of dead fish floating in the same area where the spill was reported.

Rook, which was loaded with fertiliser at the time, was ordered to temporarily relocate to an outer anchorage on Tuesday, January 15, as part of the investigation.

The vessel’s operator faces a significant fine if found guilty.
