Construction of world’s first LNG-powered fast Ro-Pax catamaran begins

Spain’s Armon Shipyard is currently building the world’s first high-speed Ro-Pax catamaran ferry powered by dual LNG engines.

Shipping line Baleària will operate the vessel upon delivery.

With a length of 125 metres and a beam of 28 metres, the new catamaran will have capacity for 1,200 passengers and 500 cars.

The vessel will be propelled by four Wärtsilä dual LNG/diesel engines delivering 8,800 kW each, allowing it to attain a service speed of 35 knots and a top speed of over 40 knots. It will also be equipped with two tanks to store the LNG, giving it a range of 400 nautical miles.

Aluminium cutting is scheduled to begin in December 2018. The vessel is expected to enter service in the summer of 2020.
