A cargo vessel came to the aid of four men who had gone adrift in the waters off Sardinia after their boat suffered engine failure and water ingress on Saturday, January 16.

The Italian-flagged cargo vessel Amatrice was sailing from Djen Djen to Oristano in Sardinia when it was requested by the Italian Coast Guard to assist the occupants of a small yacht that was in danger of sinking in rough seas more than 30 nautical miles from the coast.

At 11:00 local time, Amatrice‘s crew spotted the distressed yacht and relayed its position to the coast guard, which then sent a patrol boat to the area. All four of the yacht’s occupants were safely rescued and brought to shore by the coast guard boat crew.

The yacht sank shortly after the castaways were pulled out of the water.
