A fisherman who had been adrift at sea off La Union province in the northwestern Philippines was rescued by the crew of a passing cargo vessel on Tuesday, August 11.

The South Korean-flagged bulk carrier Unico Stella was approximately 2.5 nautical miles off La Union when its crew spotted the distressed individual floating in the water nearby and waving his arms frantically.

Unico Stella‘s crew then brought the fisherman on board their vessel and contacted the Philippine Coast Guard to coordinate his eventual transfer.

The fisherman said that he had sailed out of Ilocos Norte province some 20 nautical miles from where he was found and that he had ended up in the water after his boat capsized earlier that day.

The coast guard took the individual into their custody and brought him ashore to undergo medical treatment. He was returned to his family hours later.
