American Sugar Refining (ASR) recently took delivery of a new cargo barge to be used for the transport of milled sugar between Florida and other states further north along the US East Coast.

ASR said the 450-foot (137-metre) long Knot Refined is the first ocean-going, dry cargo barge of its size built in the United States since the early 2000s. It will make approximately 18 round trips per year from the Port of Palm Beach to transport raw sugar primarily to cane sugar refineries in Yonkers, New York and Baltimore, Maryland.

Knot Refined is the first vessel to be acquired by ASR. Prior to the its acquisition, the company relied on third-party barges to transport raw sugar coastwise.
